Experience.
My journey—from refugee to educator and leader—has shaped my unique perspective. Having served as a paraprofessional, teacher, principal, ESL Director, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, and Interim Assistant Superintendent, I bring a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of education systems. Collaborating with key policymakers and leading education experts at both national and international levels, I have gained invaluable insights that fuel my unwavering dedication to our students—the future of our community and our nation.
Accountability.
Accountability and diversity are at the core of my values, both personally and professionally. As a refugee to the United States and a member of a multicultural family, I firmly believe that every culture and identity must be recognized and celebrated. In a district as diverse as Beaverton, we need a board director who makes decisions with an equity lens at the center. I have successfully created inclusive and accountable environments where students, educators, and families feel valued. I remain committed to ensuring equity and belonging are foundational principles in our schools.
Results.
As a middle school principal, I successfully closed achievement gaps for Black students within five years. As ESL Director, I resolved over a hundred Office of Civil Rights violations and spearheaded the development of new English Language Development standards adopted by the Oregon Department of Education. Under my leadership, the Teaching and Learning team significantly expanded Dual Language programs—an essential initiative in a linguistically diverse district like Beaverton. Additionally, I played a pivotal role in early learning initiatives, contributing to the expansion of full-time Kindergarten and the successful passage of PreK for all.
“It’s an honor to endorse Dr. Vân Truong for the Beaverton School Board. As a former refugee and ESL student from Portland Public Schools, I have personally experienced the transformative impact Dr. Truong has on students like me. During her time at PPS, she established the International Youth Leadership Council (IYLC), an innovative initiative that empowers ESL students with essential leadership skills and mentorship. This program has been a cornerstone of my educational journey and has played a crucial role in my leadership development. Dr. Truong is a champion with lived experience and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized students. She is a fierce advocate who ensures every student receives the support they need. In today’s polarized educational landscape, her leadership is not just beneficial; it is essential. - Nabin Dhimal, MA, Graduate Student at Georgetown University.”
“Dr Truong,
You dug up pieces
That were so far wedged into the crevices
Of our ways,
We’d forgotten they were
Permanent fixtures.
Your cheery greetings
And ever presence, reminded us
Of the old greats
The ones who loved big
And could not be moved.
Your plain talk and straight questions
Helped us nod, and sigh and relax our shoulders
But also put us to work
In a direction that
Felt like putting on something older
Yet known,
Like Dad’s worn leather coat
With the lingering smell of familiar.
You nurture
You care
Your full laugh softens biting honesty
A gem,
Like one of your well put together outfits.
Thank you.
For stepping up
And doing the work
Others failed to dream or do.
For seeing us
For reminding us of our legacy.”
