Who is Vân?

Education leader and visionary

Vân H. Truong, EdD is a student-centered educator specializing in distributive leadership. Dr. Truong has over twenty years of experience increasing student achievement and closing opportunity gaps through students, educators and families/partners. She was most recently Portland Public Schools' Interim Assistant Superintendent.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Truong worked tirelessly to close linguistic, racial and class achievement gaps while providing advanced learning opportunities for high achieving students. She understands the importance of working across various constituencies to develop a synergistic partnership focused on the whole system. This requires the ability to work across race, culture, language, class, and socioeconomic status in order to bring the best thinkers and movers together.

Dr. Truong has depth and breadth of insight in PK-16 education, from personal experiences as well as professional credentials. This allows her to understand and design programs that create success for students of different backgrounds and needs. Her own PK-16 educational experiences as a student, parent, and educator in the public education system give her personal insight into the students she serves.

Her interest in her work is personal. In 1975, Dr. Truong arrived in the United States as a refugee from Vietnam, where she attended 10 years of Vietnam’s finest education, a rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum by way of the French Catholic school system.

Dr. Truong is a lifelong learner and recently received her EdD of Educational Leadership and Instruction at the University of Portland. Her holistic approach to education led to measurable improvements in the departments she has touched. She is fluent in English, French, and Vietnamese.

Very few school leaders have had a journey that contained the hurdles and challenges Vân has overcome. Her life experiences have made her an empathetic, humble, inclusive, and authentic leader, someone who is never satisfied with ‘just some students’ succeeding, or outcomes that are ‘good enough.’
